A resident in Upchurch was cold called by a male who claimed that he was jet washing and weather proofing the neighbour's driveway. The male quoted £340 to clean the drive, which the resident decided was a reasonable price and agreed to the work.

Following the completion of the work the trader then asked the resident for £840. When the resident queried this the trader stated that the initial quote did not include the weather proof coating added to the driveway after it was jet washed. This was not made clear to the resident but as they felt intimidated by the trader they paid the money (in cash).

So what can I do to help prevent myself becoming a victim of this scam?

  • Never agree to work being carried out by a cold caller. If you are looking for a Tradesperson then use a website such as Kent County Council who can recommend approved Tradespeople.
  • Never pay in cash, and never pay up front. It is preferable to use a credit card so that your purchase is protected under the Consumer Credit Act.
  • Always ask for a receipt/invoice.
  • Always ask for identification.
  • Talk to friends and neighbours for their recommendations around reliable Tradespeople that they have used themselves.
